Mrs.Mohan has been an art teacher at Northbrook High school for a while and the moment I entered high school she became someone I really looked up to due to the way she teaches.
When asked about what she liked about teaching art, she gave a response I would expect no one to. She stated “Art has unlimited possibilities. A hundred people could be asked to do the same thing, and each one could give you a different result. Art encourages people to be individuals, creative, and most of all, human. That uniqueness is really what draws me to it. In art, there isn’t a solid “correct” solution; only what you have chosen to do. Helping young people be creative, learn about other cultures, and to have them embrace being human is the most rewarding part. Nobody said you had to be good at it. After all, it can take decades to get really good at many skills in art. But, those who are brave enough to try open the door to many fulfilling things in life”. This can help one understand Mrs. Mohan’s perspective on why art is so important to be taught, letting one notice the dedication she has into teaching what she teaches.
Aside from that, I decided to ask where she attended college and she responded with “I attended the University of Houston – Main Campus. It was a blast and one of the best decisions I made for myself”.
Getting more into her personal life, I asked about hobbies she enjoys doing outside of school. She mentioned “As most of you know I am a HUGE nerd, but I do love the outdoors, so it’s a mix of hiking, swimming, martial arts, reading, gardening, table top and videogames, and of course art”.
If one ever meets Ms.Mohan they’ll notice her cool gothic style, this led me to wonder what her favorite bands were, in which she responded with “That is such a hard decision! I listen to so many artists…I guess my top five, in no order, are: Tool, Hozier, Florence and the Machine, System of a Down, and ABBA”.
The rest of the questions were based on her likings on certain things, which can also help one see the type of person Mrs.Mohan is and how diverse her tastes are on things, making her unique. First question being, “what’s your favorite movie was and what it was about” she said “Gotta go with the Lord of the Rings extended edition trilogy. While I do love a good psychological horror film, and movies like Interstellar, the high fantasy genre has always been my favorite. To avoid going on a long nerdy tangent of everything Tolkien wrote, simply put, Lord of the Rings is about a ring”.
The second question being “What is your favorite book?” In which she gave me an answer of “I wouldn’t say it’s actually my favorite, but I do know a lot of students here have read Coraline and it is a great book.
The last question being “What is your favorite dish/food?”, where she responded, “I love Indian food. It is some of the best food in the world. One of my favorite dishes is eggplant bharta”. An interesting choice I’ve never heard one say.
The last two questions were very straightforward, having asked “Do you have any pets?” And she said, “I have a Roomba named Roswell. It screams at me in Japanese when it’s stuck under the cabinets.
And having saved the best for last I asked
“If you could travel anywhere, where would you go and why?” And she said, “Anywhere? I’ve been to most places on the planet I really wanted to visit, or I have my trips booked and I’m just waiting for the time to arrive. I think I’d have to settle for outer space as my answer. The world has been explored, I’d like to see something no one has ever seen before. Plus, there’d be almost no other people: Bonus!”
