Josue Giron Awarded Full Tuition POSSE Scholarship

Northbrook High School senior Josue Giron has been accepted as a class of 2025 POSSE Foundation Scholar. This fall, he will attend Carleton College, a private, liberal arts college in Northfield, Minnesota.

Giron will also be able to continue his football career at Carleton College, defying the odds that one can achieve an excellent education and enjoy playing sports at the collegiate level.

Founded in 1989, the POSSE Foundation and its partner institutions empower diverse groups of leaders who transform their communities. The selection process begins in September through December each year known as the Dynamic Assessment Process (DAP). The DAP finds students who might be missed by the traditional admissions process and criteria at highly selective schools, but who can excel on campus.

According to Crystal Orazu, assistant to the director of POSSE Houston, over 1900 students were nominated in Houston, and 62 scholars were selected. Each scholar will attend college on a full tuition ride for four years.

Giron attributes this achievement to his involvement in football, student council, journalism, and his family-owned ranch, F&J Ranch.

“I wouldn’t have been able to achieve this scholarship without the support of my family, teachers, peers, coaches, and everyone else that was there in supporting me in this journey,” Giron said. “It’s a blessing that I am able to continue my dream and my parents’ dream in continuing to play football at the collegiate level and being able to continue my education at an affordable price.”

He has been a member of the Northbrook football program all four years, achieving over 100 tackles during the 2024 football season, earning him the title of being the first-ever Northbrook football player to achieve this goal.

“He shows that hard work pays off,” said Abraham Lopez, right-guard of the Northbrook football team. “After practice during the summer, Josue asked us to help him clean up his house that suffered roof damage after the hurricane. We all jumped at the opportunity without hesitation. He puts the team before himself. It’s not the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog.”
