“You” is an American Netflix series based on a book written by Caroline Kepnes. The show has 4 seasons with an upcoming 5th season. It is a psychological thriller, drama, and dark comedy. I love how the story of this show is based on the perspective of a serial killer and his reason for why he is the way that he is.
The story follows a man named Joe Goldberg from New York. It is set in Joe’s point of view where we get constant follow up on his thoughts where he is telling the story. Joe has psychological problems he deals with stemming from his past trauma. With that being said, Joe distorts the true meaning of love and instead becomes very obsessive. The actor who plays Joe does a very good job in his role portrays quite well into the mind of that kind of person.
I like the fact that the narrative is this man trying to constantly do good. Although, it is contradicting because he’s constantly committing acts of murder “in the name of love”. Aligning with the main theme of delusion and obsession. Joe’s obsession and delusion goes so far that at some points he thinks that murder is a justifiable reason for the person he “loves”. The truth is that he’s really obsessed with these women and isn’t true love.
People who love unexpected turns and heightened drama would eat this show up and re-watch it countless times. I wouldn’t recommend it to someone who is scared of the idea of being stalked, someone who is sensitive to graphic images, or someone who has trauma with certain aspects. Containing graphic, emotional, and violent themes, this show should definitely not be watched by a younger audience. Deserving a rating of TV-MA. Overall this is a great show full of suspense and psychological thriller, earning a rating of a 4.5 in my books.
