Who is Nirvana?

Who is Nirvana? Nevermind if you already know, but for those who don’t: let’s go back 30 years, all the way back to the 90s.

Originally Kurt Cobain (guitar/vocals), Aaron Burckhard (drums), and Krist Novoselic (bass) only formed the band to pay for their apartment they were living in. Their careers started slowly, but when they would release their hit album, Nevermind in 1991, they would soon be hitting stadiums all over the world.

Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic were friends already in high school and created the band and soon met Dave Grogl because of all the drummers the band went through. Aaron Burckhard was the first drummer they had in 1987 at Aberdeen W.A. When the band first formed, he left the band because he said he was too hungover to practice one day. Their second drummer was Dave Foster in 1988, their third drummer was Chad Channing from 1988 to 1990, next came Dan Peters in 1990, and the final band member that was with them until the end was Dave Grohl.

Together the group released three studio albums: Bleach, Nevermind, and In Utero, five live albums: MTV Unplugged, From the Muddy Banks, Live at Reading, Live at the Paramount, Live and Loud, and 21 total singles.

On April 4, 1994, the lead singer and guitarist Kurt Cobain committed suicide while, under the influence of drugs. He was shot in the head. However, some say that his death wasn’t a suicide and that his wife, Courtney Love, had shot him herself.

This is due to a film that was recovered and developed 20 years later showing pictures taken of Cobain’s dead body, and these pictures were not shot by the police. Still to this day, his death remains (legally) a suicide, though some fans still have doubt. In April of this year, Kurt Cobain had officially been dead longer than he had been alive.

However, two years later former band member Dave Grohl formed his band that he named Foo Fighters in 1994, with guitarists Pat Smear and Chris Shiflett, bassist Nate Mendel, drummer Taylor Hawkings, and on the keyboard: Rami Jaffee. Still to this day, the band Foo Fighters continues to make music and perform live worldwide. While they aren’t Nirvana, Dave Grohl plays in honor of his best friend, Kurt Donald Cobain.
