Massive Tornado That Devastated Houston

On May 16, all of a sudden Houston became a victim of a massive tornado. It was later to be called a “derecho” that affected the Houston area. According to the National Weather Service, a derecho is a long-lived, fast-moving wind storm that’s associated with a group of thunderstorms, and is characterized by strong winds that move in a straight line.

There were severe damages all around the place that include fallen trees, no power, flipped over cars, huge damages on buildings, and not enough places to get food or vital necessities.

In some places it took days or even weeks to get power back, while that happened society were joining together to help each other while the state was still trying to fix all the electricity problems. People were trying in different ways to deal with the massive heat that was outside that for some people really can be suffocating or even mortal.

“It was so depressing, hot and sweaty, I couldn’t use my phone,” said Michelle Lara, junior at Northbrook High School. “We did not have power for almost a week and a half, almost two.”

Including that, there was a lot of physical damage to cars or buildings. Cars were all flipped over, many were with fallen trees on top of them, and it happened the same to the cars to the point were the ceilings of apartments were torn apart with broken windows.

While Houston is no stranger to severe weather, including tornadoes and strong thunderstorms, it is not geographically prone to experiencing tornadoes. These events are more common in the central and eastern United States.

The most tragic event that happened that day was the loss of life. Seven people lost their lives with all the incidents that occurred. People were trapped in their homes either for fallen trees, and fallen ceilings. Also, there were some car accidents because there was no power on the streets.
