On December 11, we were able to sit down with the 12th-grade principal Andrea Valencia-Hernandez to learn more about her passion for working with students and her journey as an educator. The conversation provided valuable insight into the goals and values guiding the senior class this year.
When asked how long she has served as a principal, Ms. Valencia shared that she is now in her second year in the role. Although still early in her administrative career, she brings meaningful inspiration from mentors who shaped her path. She credits an assistant principal she once worked with describing her as always fair and encouraging as one of her biggest influences.
Ms. Valencia explained that her motivation to become a principal stems from her desire to support both students and teachers. “The need to help not only students but also teachers. I want them to feel supported and encouraged,” she said, emphasizing her belief in coaching and guiding educators so they can better serve their classrooms.
When discussing the values she hopes students carry with them after graduation, Ms. Valencia highlighted the importance of hard work and believing in one’s own abilities. She wants seniors to leave high school understanding that they can achieve anything as long as they commit to it.
Her goals for the senior class reflect this same confidence: she hopes to see 100% of 12th graders graduate, and for each of them to have opportunities to pursue a four-year or two-year college pathway after high school.
As the interview wrapped up, Merry asked how she hopes students will remember her once they move on. Ms. Valencia’s answer was simple yet heartfelt: she hopes to be remembered as “a principal that really cares about them.”
Her message to the senior class reinforces just how strongly she believes in their potential.
This interview offers seniors a clear glimpse into the dedication and vision of a principal committed to their success both in high school and beyond.
