Phones or Security?

Phones or Security?

I’m pretty sure mostly everyone has heard of the things happening in America. But there is one thing in particular that doesn’t and does make sense at the same time.

The use of phones during classroom time may get on a teachers nerve, some might give a warning while others will take it away on the spot. Phones are indeed addicting, you scroll, you text with friends, yet the next thing you find out is that you don’t want to put it away. I would also like to address the recent threats to schools throughout America, it can be frightening, yes, and schools should take action immediately.  The problem is that some schools take more thought into the use of phones than a life or death situation.

Schools in many districts have taken a liking to the lockable phone pouches. If you don’t know what it is, let me explain; the lockable phone pouch is like a bag where obviously phones are put in and later locked, making it inaccessible to use. In this case schools are making students put them in before the instructional period, and lock them with a device put throughout the school and unlock them at the end of the school day. Students are only able to access their phones during lunch time, yet it’s become a hard task for some. Long lines of students just to be able to text a simple “hey” to someone. But that’s not the real problem.

The real problem comes when there’s a problem with an emergency.

Suppose an intruder comes to your school with a weapon, most people’s first instinct would be to turn off the lights, lock the doors and pull out their phones, call the police or call/text their parents. But if you add it with the phone pouches situation, then that would be a huge problem. How are students going to call for help? Text their parents and let them know the situation? Why pay more mind in the possession of cell phones during class than a literal safety hazard?

Sure phones might be distracting and there should be limits to the use of them during class but there should be more attention to potential threats. That way students can be kept safe.
