Our school’s band program has been around for a while. We might not always bring home gold medals, but we have a lot of fun and we enjoy ourselves at competitions.

During football season we attend all the football games and play for the football team, during this we endure freezing cold and scorching hot weather. I, Jairo Sorto, am a sophomore and have been with the band and have witnessed their many accomplishments this year.

This year we’ve had 12 students go to regional all state and compete against the best student musicians in our district.

I can say that being in the band is a very fun experience, we play different tunes that are recognizable by people.

Most of them are very upbeat, and a favorite at the football games is the fight song. Our fight song is what we play every time at the beginning of football games and at pep rally events. More than likely, if you attend the football games, you might hear it while the team is playing.

I’ve been playing flute since sixth grade, or five years and I’d say I’m pretty good at it. However the best part is screaming and dancing to cadences from the drumline.

The drumline cadences are pretty amazing, we get to move around and make noise. Some band members are more into it than others, but I think it’s important to go all out.

Especially against our rival game at the end of the year, against Spring Woods.

In addition we do marching shows that are done at the UIL competition. UIL is a big deal for most school bands. We usually do our practicing for our major competitions at our football games. That’s why giving our best at the football games is so important.

We also have to learn it from scratch during the summer before school starts.

Also my wonderfully, funny, and smart friend Inara Terry says that as a spectator at the football games she can vouch for how hard we work and the quality of our sound.

The band is a very special community that works hard and brings music to Northbrook.
